About JW Custom Painting & Decorating

A tradition of craftsmanship.

A considered approach to interiors.

Our Story

Built on experience

My experience in painting and decorating began more than three decades ago, when I established S.M. Husted Professional Painting in Massachusetts. What began with traditional painting and decorating developed over the years into extensive experience with wallcoverings, specialty finishes, tile and the details that bring an interior together. After years spent working on homes and interiors in the United States and abroad, I returned to the trade with a broader perspective—not simply on how individual finishes are installed, but on how color, texture, materials and craftsmanship work together within a room. JW Custom Painting & Decorating represents that approach today: traditional trade skills applied to considered, contemporary interiors.

The meaning behind JW

JW Custom Painting — craftsmanship detail

The name JW is a tribute to my father, John Warga, who worked as a painter, decorator and paperhanger in New Jersey. His original business card and the photograph alongside it are reminders of a trade that has changed considerably over the years. Materials, tools and techniques have evolved, but the fundamentals have not: preparation matters, details matter, and good work should speak for itself. JW carries his initials forward—not as an attempt to recreate his business, but as a connection between where the craft began in my family and the way I practice it today.

Today, JW Custom Painting & Decorating brings those principles to premier wallcovering installation, fine painting and decorating, custom tile and stone, and thoughtful interior finish work. Whether the project is a single feature wall or a complete interior, the same standards apply: careful preparation, skilled execution and respect for the materials and the home.

How We Work

What we believe about the craft

Preparation is the work

The quality of a finish is determined long before the final material is applied. Surface preparation, priming, lining and other necessary groundwork are not steps to abbreviate—they are where the result is made.

Respect for the home

We work in occupied homes and treat them accordingly. Furnishings are protected, floors are covered and work areas are maintained carefully throughout the project. At the end of each day, the home is left clean and orderly.

Honest specification

We tell clients what a project will actually involve, what the materials will do, and what the result will look like. We do not oversell and we do not underdeliver.

Craft before speed

Traditional techniques and modern materials each have their place. We use the methods appropriate to the material and the project, without sacrificing quality simply to work faster.

Service Area

Where we work

We serve clients across Hunterdon County, Somerset County and Central New Jersey, with a focus on residential projects where the quality of the decorating finish is a priority.

For projects outside this area, we are happy to discuss requirements on a case-by-case basis.
